Stone Mountain Park, 16 miles east of downtown Atlanta off highway 78. Six dollars per car load, plus entrance fee to various attractions, (800) 317-2006. A day pass to all attractions may be purchased for a reasonable $16 per adult. There is a campground in the park.

This is a beautiful park where people gather for picnics, hikes, swimming and much more. The focal point of the park is a huge stone mountain with a carving depicting the three leaders of the Confederacy: President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Tomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. This carving is larger than Mount Rushmore, but due to the massiveness of the mountain it appears much smaller.

Additional attractions, many of which have a fee, include a sky lift, a plantation, a scenic railroad, a couple of museums, a wildlife preserve, and much more.

The sight that left us in awe was the laser show. Pack a picnic and head for the huge lawn in front of the carving. For close in parking you will want to arrive a couple hours early, but even if you arrive at the last minute you will find space on the lawn. The show included lasers, pictures, lights and fireworks. We have seen laser shows from the Grand Coulee Dam to Disney World and this one has them all beat! You won't want to miss it if you are near Atlanta! (SB 5/2000)
